Writing skills are the skills you use to write effectively and succinctly. A good writer is someone who can communicate their point to their audience without using too much fluff and in a way that the other person can easily understand. Writing skills can help students build their vocabulary. This can improve their communication skills, as well as their ability to understand complex texts and concepts.

Writing skills are not just a medium of communication; it’s a way of accurately expressing or flaw your ideas to others. Here are some advantages or Benefits

 Of good writing skills:

  • Encouraging Cognitive Development.
  • Personality Success.
  • Achieving Academic Success.
  • Improving Communication Skills.
  • Enhancing Creativity.
  • Improving Language Proficiency.
  • Developing Critical Thinking Skills.

Five basic writing skills are Grammar, Spelling and punctuation, Handwriting and Reading comprehension.

Listening/Reading and analyzing: Conscious listening & reading opens many possibilities for writing styles thereby helping one learn different techniques and approaches to shaping the writing style and quality. Moreover, focusing on the way sentence is structured and Language employed.

Brainstorming ideas and creating an outline: Brainstorming is a key part of the writing process. This enables one to speed up their writing thereby creating better content.  Although it might seem like extra work, outlining before one begins writing.

Practice writing on various topics: One can build a wide range of writing skills and increase their adaptability as a writer by experimenting with different writing methods, ways and styles as well as writing about subjects they are unfamiliar with. Encourage students to keep a diary

Encourage regular reading in the classroom and at home: Well-chosen texts provide learners with good-quality models for their writing. In this way, they are exposed to rich language structures which lets them see how writing works and the effect it can have on the reader. Students draw on their reading experiences when producing their own writing. Parents/guardians should be encouraged to read with students at home too; this gives learners another perspective on the text from their parent/guardian and (hopefully!) helps foster a love, or at least a like, for reading.

Give learners a real-life situation to write about: Some examples of writing students could produce inspired by text or real life:

  • Within a topic (e.g., superheroes), learners create their own superhero, then write an explanation
  • After reading a story or part of a story, learners write about an event from a character’s point of view not presented in the text.

Give learners opportunities to read aloud: Giving learners the opportunity to read aloud enables them to hear how punctuation and sentence structure combine in the sentences they read. It may even help them to think more deeply about perspective as they read from the point of view of new characters
